When did National Watermelon Day start?

The Big Day is celebrated on August 3 every year and is an unofficial American holiday.

However, no one actually knows who started National Watermelon Day or when it was created – some believe farmers sponsored the event. Others believe that members of the National Watermelon Council started the tradition.

The North Carolina Watermelon Festival will hold its 37th annual celebration in Hertford County on Wednesday. The event will run for four days, until August 6, 2022.

Locals can enjoy seed spitting competitions, watermelon eating, food fair and handicraft show. The festival also features a 5,000m race, fun rides and the Little Mr and Miss Farmer competition.

History of watermelon on National Day

If you’re still not sure why there is a National Watermelon Day, the date of the fruit might interest you.

The first watermelon appeared in South Africa 5,000 years ago, and spread to Egypt where it became a daily food by 2000 BC. Watermelons were depicted in hieroglyphs on the walls of ancient buildings and were even placed in the tombs of some kings. He was supposed to nourish them in the afterlife.

Watermelon reached India in the seventh century and Europe and China in the tenth century. European colonists introduced the fruit to Americans in the 17th century.
