Netflix has continued to bring a host of new shows and movies to its fans in 2022, with one of its most anticipated projects of the year finally kicking off on Friday, August 5, 2022.
Of course, we’re talking about The Sandman.
Audiences have been treated to intriguing stills, trailers, and updates over recent months, eager to discover American fantasy dramas in store.
It tells the story of The Dreamer (played by Tom Sturridge), the titular and cosmic hypnotist who controls dreams. He was kidnapped and imprisoned for many years. Once released, he finds that he must correct everything that went wrong while he was imprisoned.
The wait is over but some may find themselves curious about the inspiration behind this series. So, is The Sandman based on the books?
Is The Sandman on Netflix based on the books?
Yes, The Sandman is based on the comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman, who also co-developed the Netflix production along with David S Goyer and Allan Heinberg.
It was published by DC Comics and the original series ran from January 1889 to March 1996, and included an impressive 75 issues in total. Among those who have brought the page to life are artists Sam Keith, Mike Drengenberg, Jill Thompson, Sean McManus, Mark Humble, Michael Zoley and Brian Talbot.
Looking back, it is generally considered one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.
In fact, it was one of the first mediums to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list and is considered incredibly influential on fantasy fiction across page and screen.
A total of ten paperback books contain the complete set of the series, with the first part – Preludes and Nocturnes – made up of The Sandman Editions #1 – 8.
What issues does The Sandman deal with?
With 75 issues, there was no way the Netflix series could cover the entire story with just one season.
The first season of The Sandman mainly covers the first two books, Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House, which equates to numbers from 1 to 16.
Episodes 1 – 4 are actually named after the first four numbers.
Also, it goes without saying that you don’t have to read graphic novels to understand the TV show.

“We try to be very loyal to the comics”
Opening up to bring his iconic work to screens at long last, Neil Gaiman sat down with Todom.
“We got to a point that didn’t really exist when I started The Sandman comics,” he explained. “The taller-format TV series now has the special effects and budgets that bring this world to life.”
Of course, technological progress has led to the emergence of new opportunities.
“Technologically, I really think we’re in a place now where we’re going to make The Sandman in a way that we wouldn’t have dreamed of making even 15 years ago, or even ten years ago.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg also gave his insight: “We try to be very loyal [the] Caricatures and their soul. Neil is very present. Every text, every prop, every outfit, all the combos, everything catches Neil and his responses. You feel like you’re living inside a comic book when you’re walking around the filming locations.”
The Sandman is broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
