As a fantasy series, Netflix’s The Sandman is filled with weird and wonderful characters who possess a range of abilities that might seem unusual to fans unfamiliar with the original comic book franchise.
One such character is Rose Walker who became the center of attention after being partially introduced during the show’s opening season.

Who is Rose Walker in The Sandman?
Rose Walker was introduced in episode 7 of The Sandman and quickly became a major character in the final episodes of season one.
It’s a mysterious being known as the Dream Vortex, an organism with a special connection to the Dream world (also known as Morpheus) known as Dreaming, where humans go to dream while they sleep.
As a Dream Vortex, Rose is able to traverse dreams as she pleases, while most humans are confined to one place within the world.
This means that Rose is able to inadvertently break down barriers between dimensions and despite her innocent intentions, could be able to destroy both the dream world and the waking world.
Part of Morpheus’ remit as a Dream Master is to eliminate any Dream Vortexes that appear.
The only time Morpheus failed to stop the Dream Vortex, it destroyed the universe earlier, so he will now go to whatever means necessary to eliminate any Dream Vortexes in the future.
Where did Rose get her strength from?
Rose’s Dream Vortex powers are hereditary, which means that they were passed down by members of her family.
The original Dream Vortex in this timeline was actually Rose’s grandmother, Unity Kinkaid.
However, the powers of loneliness ended up being passed down through the generations after she fell into a deep sleep for 100 years while Dream was imprisoned by Roderick Burgess.
During her long sleep, the unit met a handsome man in her dreams. This guy was actually Desire, Dream’s problematic brother, who ended up impregnating the unit while she slept.
This means that Rose is technically Desire’s granddaughter, which means she is part of an endless family.
Desire was planning to manipulate Dream into killing Rose, which would have resulted in him being convicted as it prohibited the Infinite from spilling their family’s blood.
However, Desire’s plan is thwarted at the end of Season 1 when Unity reclaims her place in Dream Vortex and sacrifices herself to save Rose and allow her to live a normal life.
Who plays Rose Walker?
Vanessu Samunyai played Rose Walker, who also goes by the name Kyo Ra.
Vanessu Samunyai was born in Warwickshire to Zimbabwean heritage on April 23, 2001, making her 21 years old as of The Sandman’s release.
Her role as Rose Walker in The Sandman is actually her first professional work as an actress as she has no other credits to her name.
Like most actors in the modern industry, Vanessu Samunyai is very active on social media, most notably on Instagram where she has just under 1900 at the time of writing, although this is expected to increase after her debut in The Sandman.
The Sandman is now available to stream on Netflix following its August 5, 2022 release.
