Her most notable role was as Lieutenant Ora in Star Trek from 1966 to 1969. She later reprized her original role in six Star Trek films.

The actress helped NASA break boundaries

A decade after Stra Trek ended, Nichelle appeared in a promotional film, intended to recruit “women and people of color to apply to become astronauts.”

According to NASA, the next class of astronauts enlisted Jay Bluford and Sally Ride, the first black American in space and the first American woman in space.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement, “Nichelle Nichols has been a pioneering actress, advocate, and dear friend to NASA. At a time when black women were rarely seen on screen, Nicholas’ portrayal as Nyota Aura in Star Trek served as a mirror of America that promoted civil rights.” .

Apparently, several astronauts and other NASA employees noticed that Uhura was the reason they wanted to join the agency.

Martin Luther King Jr was a huge fan of her

Halfway through the first season of Star Trek, Nichelle wanted to step down from the show because she wanted to pursue her career in theaters.

But she changed her mind after meeting Martin Luther King Jr. at a fundraiser for the civil rights group. The event organizer told her that her “biggest fan” was waiting to see her.

When she turned around to see who it was, she saw MLK Jr. walking towards her.

She told him that she was planning to leave the show, but he convinced her not to.

Nichelle reminds him, “This is a God-given opportunity to change the face of television, to change the way we think. We are no longer second-class or third-class citizens. He had to do it in the 23rd century but the 20th century is watching.”
