For better than worse, Andrew and his brother Tristan Tate have taken social media by storm.
The two are primarily known for their provocative views but are less well known for their connections to the game of chess.
It turns out that Andrew Tate’s father was an American international chess master and Andrew himself was the Indiana State Champion at the age of five.
Who was Emory Tate?
Emory Tate holds an International Master’s degree in Chess.
Similar to his son Andrew, he learned to play chess as a child. His legacy is highly respected in the game, and Grandmaster Maurice Ashely has described him as a “pioneer of African-American chess”.
He was not only a master of chess, but also a sergeant in the US Air Force. The champion died shortly after collapsing during a tournament.
Emory Tate ‘never studied’
What will shock many is Tate’s lack of formal training, he learned it as a child and was able to pick it up quickly.
His son Andrew said: “I have never seen him study chess books. He also hates chess computers and has never used them. He just sat and played.”
Further insight into his brilliant mind is his ability to learn languages, he can speak Russian, German and Spanish, the latter two Andrew notes that he picked up “by chance.”
While he has inspired many players in the world of chess, for many African American players his name is considered legendary.

Andrew and Christian Tate continue to keep their father’s memory alive.
The couple often talk about their father and his legacy on their YouTube channel.
His games and techniques are still talked about within the chess community.
