Liverpool were delayed in the opening game of the Premier League against Fulham this afternoon.
It was a perfect first game for the Reds of the new season, who finished second in both the Premier League and the Champions League last season.
With the Cottgers being a newly promoted team, three points for Liverpool were highly expected.
However, Marco Silva’s team did not stick to the scenario and Aleksandar Mitrovic fired a superb header past Alisson in the 33rd minute to give the hosts a surprising lead.
Mitrovic rose above the level of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to header at the far post.
The 23-year-old barely got off the ground to challenge the Serbian assassin, and Jim Biglin criticized the England international’s defense.
He said live on Optus Sport: “I’m thinking about ‘jumping’ for Alexander-Arnold. Get off the ground. Don’t let him bother you, put your muscles in. Alexander-Arnold never competed for it.”
Fulham x Liverpool
Liverpool, who have a £85m striker on the bench at Darwin Nunez, will certainly be a lot stronger in the second half.
It was a frustrating first half, especially given how amazing they looked in the Community Shield’s victory over Manchester City last week.
But it is undeniable that Klopp will have more motivation for his forces after the break as an opening defeat at the weekend, at the hands of a team that has just returned to the Premier League, would not be a good look at all.
