Crystal Palace are hoping to bring Alex Moreba to the Premier League as Patrick Vieira is in talks with the £14m Leipzig midfielder, Foot Mercato reports.
It’s easy to forget, as Moriba was loaned to Valencia in January after their disastrous first few months in Germany, the amount of upheaval in which he initially appeared for the Leipzig side famous for revealing the next generation of football stars.
Barcelona are devastated to lose one of their most exciting graduates at La Masia since the Pep Guardiola era, as Moreba rejected a new deal at Camp Nou before leaving under a cloud in 2022.
But suggestions that Leipzig is willing to let Moreba go already tell their own story.
Could Alex Moreba be reborn in Crystal Palace?
The teenager played only half an hour of Bundesliga football, however, it must be said, that he showed glimpses of real quality during his short stint at Mestalla.
According to Foot Mercato, Moriba’s next destination could be Selhurst Park. Vieira is said to have already “contacted” the Guinea international eight times, with Crystal Palace looking for a dynamic and technical midfielder to partner with Cheek Doukuri in the Eagles engine room.
Vieira might see something of his own in Moriba; Number eight is elegant yet majestic.
“He’s very strong physically,” former Barcelona coach Denis Silva Puig told Bleacher Report. “But he’s also a very smart player.
“Here he is called ‘Pogba Barcelona’. He is like a young Pogba. He is very smart – and that is his great potential. He is a great player without a doubt.”
Others even called Moriba – who canceled a flight away from joining Pep Guardiola at Manchester City back in 2019 – the ‘new Yaya Toure’.
Manchester City that got away
There is a player somewhere out there. One player hell too. Yes, the 2021/22 Moriba movie was nothing short of a disaster. But only 18 months have passed since he was described as the future Barcelona midfield.
“We met Txiki Begiristain (Manchester City’s sporting director),” recalls Moriba’s father, speaking to the sport this week. He explained the entire project to us.
“A few weeks later, we had tickets to fly to Manchester and sign the contract. I canceled it. I wanted Ilaix to be an example and a reference for Barcelona’s future generations.”
In other news, the club made an offer to sign a Newcastle and Villa target to replace Barcelona’s £46m signing
