Frank Lebov admitted that Gabriel Jesus enjoyed his impressive debut for Arsenal on Friday night, but did not rank him as one of his fellow critics.

Jesus helped Arsenal start their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park yesterday.

The former Manchester City fighter had an immediate impact and created a golden opportunity for Gabriel Martinelli after just three minutes, although his fellow Brazilian striker only managed to get past the Eagles’ column.

It was a constant threat throughout the first half as Mikel Arteta’s side led 1-0, with Martinelli offsetting his previous header in the opener.

But Leboeuf claimed on ESPN that the 25-year-old ‘disappeared’ after the halftime break, disagreeing with Don Hutchison’s post-match rating for South America.

He told ESPN, “Well, I wouldn’t give him a nine and a half because he really disappeared in the second half for me. The first half was great. He should have scored. He made the difference when he was physically sharp. Overall, Gabriel Jesus really showed what talent he has and what He can bring him to Arsenal.”

It must be said that this is a relatively balanced view from the former France international.

The truth is that Jesus – who was described by Jamie Carragher as “razor-sharp” in the first half – she did He gradually fades throughout the relatively unknown second half for him and Arsenal.

It is no coincidence that the more Patrick Vieira’s team progressed in the competition, the less ball Jesus saw.

However, there are still plenty of reasons to cheer the Gunners and based on that, the £45m has definitely been well spent.
