David Moyes has six players unable to surrender at West Ham United before facing Manchester City on the opening day of the season, but newcomer Gianluca Scamaca may not be one.

Gianluca Scamaca is not one of the things that West Ham don’t have for Manchester City

Gianluca Scamaca may not be among the six David Moyes players who cannot surrender at West Ham United ahead of facing Manchester City on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The Irons host the defending champions at the London Stadium on Sunday 7 August. Two goals from Jarrod Bowen nearly won the Hammers the last time the two teams met in May. But Vladimir Koval scored an own goal in the 69th minute to see the match end 2-2.

West Ham have not defeated Manchester City in the First Division since September 2015, with a 2-1 win over Al Ittihad. The Irons also beat the Citizens at home in October 2014, losing 11 out of 15. Manchester City won four of seven at the London Stadium.

Moyes has spent a lot strengthening his squad so far this summer after falling into the Europa League spots. West Ham paid Rennes £30m for defender Nayef Aguerd, and paid PSG £7.75m to keep Alphonse Areola on loan after the goalkeeper was loaned out.

The Hammers also handed over £12m to midfielder Flynn Downs from Swansea City, as Moyes added depth after Mark Noble’s retirement and Alex Krall returned to Spartak Moscow after his loan deal ended. West Ham also paid Sassuolo £30.5m to sign star striker Skamaka.

But Aguirre will miss the Irons match, as the Moroccan sustained an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly match with Rangers. He underwent successful surgery at the end of July, and now faces an indefinite period on the sidelines after just two non-competitive rounds.

There are no unmissable summer deals at West Ham against Manchester City

It is also unlikely that Downs will appear among the West Ham players who cannot do without Moyes at home to Manchester City. Declan Rice and Thomas Suchic remain the Irons’ first choice in the central midfield, having formed the elite partnership for the past two and a half years.

Likewise, Areola may start the season on the bench after he failed to oust Lukasz Fabianski last season. The Frenchman made only one appearance in the Premier League in 2021/22, coming in to replace Fabianski – who signed a one-year contract in July, after eight clean sheets in 37 games.

Skamaka is the only one of West Ham’s four summer signings so far who could start against Manchester City, but he’s not able to escape yet. The Italian would give Moyes a different type of striker than Michael Antonio represents, being a 6-foot-5 target over a dynamic striker.

Moyes may be on the side of caution and stick with what he knows against Pep Guardiola on Sunday. Antonio also finished last season finding his form, with two goals and an assist in his last three games, and lifted the 32-year-old to 10 and 8 in 36 Premier League games.

Scamaka will push Antonio to play at a high level, knowing that his primary place is now in jeopardy. The 23-year-old arrived in east London, scoring 16 goals in 36 Serie A appearances last season. The outcome of his efforts included against AC Milan, Napoli and Inter Milan as well.

Three defenders make up six non-dropping hammers by David Moyes

Along with star midfielders Rice and Sosek, three defenders and one striker make up six unlikely goals against West Ham against Manchester City. He left five centers for victories, including the battle of Areola with Fabiansky to start the goal, as well as the duel of Scamaca and Antonio in the striker.

Koval expects to start the season at right-back, while Aaron Cresswell should remain at left-back. Moyes is keen to sign a new option to rival Cresswell. But while TalkSPORT reports Hammers are willing to pay Eintracht Frankfurt £16m for Filip Kostic, no deal has been reached.

Kurt Zouma will also start as a centre-back, but a place is available alongside the Frenchman after Aguerd’s injury. Angelo Ogbonna could make his first Premier League appearance since picking up an AFC Champions League injury at the end of the season in November, or Craig Dawson will remain in the unit.

Jarrod Bowen will be the last of six players unable to do without West Ham before hosting Manchester City. The England striker, who made four caps – after making his Three Lions debut in June – was Irons’ top scorer last season with 12 goals and the number one playmaker with six assists in 36 games.

Moyes faces a choice dilemma over who to start as a central attacking midfielder and on the left wing, if he continues in a 4-2-3-1 formation. A change in the system could cause Antonio and Skamaka to start a two-man attack, and allow Downs to start with Rice and Sosek.

Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals, Nikola Vlasic and Manuel Lanzini will be called to start if the Irons team sticks with a 4-2-3-1 result. But Vlasic failed to make his way into Moyes’ squad last season after joining from CSKA Moscow for an initial £27m, while Benrahma’s future was in doubt.
