The death of Mel’s late husband, Mark Monroe, is a pivotal moment in the Virgin River as the loss proved to be the catalyst for Mel’s move to her new home.
Despite his passing before the events of the series, Mark’s death hangs over Mel in the series’ early seasons as he reappears in flashbacks and visions of moments of conflict.

Who is Mark Monroe in Virgin River?
Mark Munro is Mel’s late husband who, prior to his death, was a talented doctor who worked in the Los Angeles emergency room with Mel and also a devoted sailor.
During their marriage, which was happy by all accounts, he and Mel repeatedly tried to get pregnant so that they could start a family.
However, after the couple lost their stillborn daughter, they tried IVF treatment but that also failed, further straining their marriage.
After five unsuccessful attempts to conceive, Mel and Mark disagreed about whether they should continue IVF treatment, as Mel wished to continue despite the losses she had incurred, which led to a heated argument between the couple.
How did Mark Monroe die in Virgin River?
Mark Monroe died in a car accident.
On the night of their argument, while driving home in a storm, Mel suggests her and Mark take a break from their marriage because she thinks they want different things from their relationship.
During the argument, Mark took his eyes off the road and didn’t see the truck that was about to crash into the side of their car.
Mark was taken to the hospital after the accident but his injuries were fatal and he died with Mel by his side.
Mel felt very guilty about Mark’s death because she thought it was the cause and this led her to deciding to move to the Virgin River and start over in hopes of moving forward – although this is an ongoing process even by season 4.
Who does Mark play?
Taking the role of Mark Monroe in Virgin River is Daniel Gillies.
The Canadian-New Zealand actor has appeared on television and film since the late 1990s, appearing in more than 30 roles throughout his career.
Fans will likely know the 46-year-old actor better from his time in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals spin-off where he played the character Elijah Mikaelson between 2010 and 2018.
Furthermore, Daniel Gillies has also played prominent roles in the series Street Legal and Saving Hope while arguably his biggest role in the movie came in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 when he appeared as John Jameson, son of Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson.
