New FFXIV maintenance is underway today following a belated announcement from Square Enix.
Players have been warned that North American data centers are undergoing an emergency failure and will not be accessible for the remainder of the evening.
The good news is that this should solve a series of issues that have caused problems for players in the region.
However, it also means that FFXIV fans will have to find something else to do while they wait for the current server state to change.

How long are FFXIV servers down for?
Square Enix has confirmed that FFXIV maintenance is scheduled to begin at 9 PM PT on Sunday, July 24, and run through the early morning of Monday, July 25. Warning that expiry time is subject to change.
This means that the downtime for Final Fantasy 14 can be extended if the team needs it. The Home World Transfer Service and Data Center Travel System will be suspended 30 minutes before the start of maintenance and will not be available until the end of the maintenance.
It should also be noted that some features in the FFXIV Companion app will not be available when using characters in these worlds until the end of maintenance, with an official message from Square Enix stating that:
“We will address an issue where server equipment affects the entire North American data center and we will have to replace server equipment. During this period, the North American data center will not be available.”
All realms located in the North American data center will be affected, which means that players will have to wait for FFXIV’s maintenance to complete today before they can return to complete missions and purchase homes. Today’s maintenance was posted under the emergency segment, which means fans didn’t get much notice before it started.
No more server downtime is expected this week unless more problems are encountered in North American worlds, or other problems found globally. FFXIV is currently available to play on Steam, PS4, and PS5 consoles, with no word on whether it will make it to the Xbox platform.
