Humphrey De Forest, also known as Boogie, was an American stage and film actor. His roles in classic Hollywood films cemented his place as an American cultural icon. Bogart was named the greatest male star in classic American cinema by the American Film Institute in 1999.
Bogart began his career in Broadway shows before beginning his film career with Up the River (1930) for Fox, where he played gangsters in supporting roles for the next decade. He was praised for his performance as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), but was secondary to the Warner Bros. cast. Others who have obtained leadership roles. Bogart also received praise for his portrayal of gangster Hugh “Baby Face” Martin in William Wyler’s Dead End (1937).
