Inside Seiki Kuroda’s legacy as Google Doodle honours Japanese ‘father of Western-style’ art

Google Doodle celebrates the life and career of Seiki Kuroda, a Japanese painter and educator.

The Google homepage is known for celebrating various events and holidays, as well as honoring famous people and beautiful landmarks with fun and colorful doodles.

Today’s Doodle Gallery honors Seiki Kuroda who would have turned 156 years old on August 9, 2022.

Google Doodle celebrates Seiki Kuroda

Google Doodle on Tuesday celebrates the life of Japanese painter Seki Kuroda on his 156th birthday.

“Today’s doodles celebrate the life of Seki Kuroda, who was born on this day in 1866, and her 156th birthday,” wrote Google Doodle.

Kuroda was an influential artist known as the father of Western-style painting in Japan. He was also a teacher and artistic director of the Tokyo School of Art, as well as the founder of the White Horse Society.”

Thanks to Google Doodle today, many social media users have discovered Kuroda’s famous paintings and learned more about his career.

Who was Seki Kuroda?

Kuroda was born on August 9, 1866 in Kagoshima, Japan. He was adopted by his uncle and moved to Tokyo to live in his house.

As a teenager, he started learning English and French to prepare for his further education. Kuroda moved to Paris in 1884 where he attended law school before deciding to pursue his passion for painting.

Kuroda was influenced by the Western style of teaching while studying in France and took this inspiration when he returned to Japan.

He launched a school of Western-style painting called Tenshin Dojo and also established the White Horse Society, which consisted of Japanese yoga and painting enthusiasts.

His paintings and his legacy

Later in his career, Kuroda was appointed as the Imperial Household Artist to create pieces for the Tokyo Imperial Palace.

Some of his most famous paintings are Woman Holding a Mandolin (1891), Maiko (1893), The Fields (1907), Lilies (1909), among others.

His work can be found in exhibitions at many museums, including the Artisone Museum in Tokyo and the Kuroda Memorial Hall at the Tokyo National Museum.

Kuroda died on July 15, 1924 and the Japanese government awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun posthumously.
