Jesse Marsh said at Thursday’s press conference – as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post – that Patrick Bamford looks sharp and although he is likely to start for Leeds against Wolves, he is not yet 100% fit.

Bamford, 28, ended the pre-season without suffering any injuries by scoring an excellent double in a 6-2 win over Cagliari in the second division last Sunday. But it comes after managing only nine matches in the Premier League last season due to injuries.

The England striker has already spoken of his desire to return to his best to find his way to the World Cup. He is expected to start against Wolverhampton after 90 minutes of play against the Italians.

When asked about Bamford’s fitness, Marsh gave an encouraging update after seven of his teammates were left out of the game. He says the ex-Chelsea man looks sharp, but hasn’t yet reached his peak fitness.

“It’s been a big week for him, he looks great, he looks fit, he looks strong. The good thing also is that Patrick is now closer to 100%, we have been able to work tactically through what we want him to look like.

“I think there’s a lot of room for improvement and that’s our goal to help him. He looks great, he’s incredibly emotional and I know we have a great player on our hands. Is he 100%, maybe not but he’s close.”

Marsh: Leeds Bamford star looks sharp but not 100%

It’s great news for Leeds. Comparing this campaign to last season, Bamford is basically another new signing. Marsh now has the England international at his disposal, capable of scoring more than 15 league goals in a season.

What Marsh must be keen on is pushing Bamford to the ground. Last season, he tried to bring Bamford back to the side with the team battling relegation. But now, he did it in a more methodical way, during the pre-season campaign.

Bamford will definitely start against Wolves on Saturday and although he may not get 90 minutes, Leeds have at least Joe Gilhardt and five subs to use. After a few matches, Leeds fans can expect Bamford to return at his best.
