Kakegurui Twin just launched worldwide on Netflix, but what do we know so far about the second season of the prequel animated spin-off?
Netflix anime content has been decidedly missing out over recent months, and aside from Uncle From Another World’s semi-streaming, there’s been very little to get excited about… until now.
Fortunately, it’s finally time to visit one of the most ruthless schools in anime history as of August 4The tenththe broadcasting giant released the six-episode Kakegurui Twin series.
A great series of gambling with money, hearts, strategies and loyalty, Kakegurui Twin is easily one of our favorite shows off the Summer 2022 slate: but with just six episodes, fans quickly plunge into the entire first season.
While Kakegurui Twin Season 2 has yet to officially renew for a second season, we’re betting the anime show will be back for another round – which is why we’re so confident in our gamble.
We’re betting a lot on the odds of Kakegurui Twin Season 2
As previously noted, the Kakegurui Twin has yet to be publicly renewed for a second season; However, there are plenty of indications that another broadcast will be produced.
The most visible indicator of Kakegurui Twin Season 2 is the open ending of Episode VI, which featured a post-credit scene that definitely hinted that there was more to come. In the final moments of “A Resisting Girl”, after the ending song, we see Juraka and Mibuomi talking about Mary.
Juraka asks if Mibumi has given in to Mari, he replies “No, I’m in love with her” adding how “She will definitely be a major player in our school.” He then concludes that her winning the game is “the reason she needs to join Full-Bloom at all costs…or I’ll have to crush her”.
The good news is that there is plenty of source material from the original manga series of Kakegurui Twin Season 2 to be produced. Episode VI concluded with the adaptation to Volume 3 Chapter 14 of the original manga series; However, as of August 2022, 12 full volumes of Tankobon have been published across a total of 81 chapters in Japan.
This means there will likely be enough source material for three more seasons of the Kakegurui Twin. Add to that the fact that both seasons of the main Kakegurui Twin series each contained 12 episodes (the Kakegurui Twin only had six), and all signs are that we’ll see Mary and her co-stars return for more high-stakes gambling.
How has the anime been rated so far?
One potential caveat about the Kakegurui Twin renewal status, as with all streaming titles, is popularity; Enough people need to watch the anime before the renewals are announced.
While it’s too early to give a unanimous opinion on the popularity of the Kakegurui Twin (it was only available for a day to be fair), early responses to the anime were overwhelmingly positive.
The Kakegurui Twin currently scores an impressive average of 7.37/10 on MyAnimeList, 80% on Anilist, and 8/10 on IMDB – although these numbers are expected to change as the pool of reviewers increases.
The top review on MyAnimeList currently describes Season 1 of the Kakegurui Twin as “her main theme is ‘Fun with Crazy Anime Girls’ and this part is awesome. As over the top, she’s confident in her mind game elements, and she does it with style.”
“The visual flair for the MAPPA brand can be found in its opening Jazzy, which is an absolutely gorgeous ending and the top characters do their job to deliver the fun you want to see. Personally, I thought the characters weren’t bad, they are one dimensional beautiful except for Mary, who has two dimensions ( Wow, who would have guessed that your Waifu is 2D xD) and the whole Yuri item.. well, he’s a wizard, except *this* is a pet, if you know what I mean. Want to watch some CGDCG (cute girls gambling) crazy) with some yuri in the mix? Well this is for you.” – User R_2_R, via MyAnimeList.
Overall, the chances of Netflix Greenlighting Season 2 increase with every positive review and social media post – while streaming numbers are the ultimate hurdle, Kakegurui Twin continues to impress.
Kakegurui Twin Season 2 release date based on MAPPA
Theorizing about a possible release date for Kakegurui Twin Season 2 depends on how much anime has been developed by MAPPA.
As noted earlier, both seasons of the main Kakegurui anime had 12 episodes, but the twins only released with six episodes. If MAPPA actually begins work on the next six episodes, we could see the Kakegurui Twin return with season two much sooner than expected – likely by the end of 2022.
If not, there’s a good chance the anime will be paused due to the already hectic MAPPA production schedule.
Arguably the best animation studio working in the field, MAPPA is currently working on Chainsaw Man, Vinland Saga Season 2, Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.
Compared to this series, if MAPPA were to prioritize their production schedule, we doubt Kakegurui Twin could match any of these titles and likely be set in the background.
Fingers crossed that the anime won’t stay in a Netflix prison for long and lose relevance in a similar way to JoJo’s Stone Ocean – this article will be updated once more information is known about Kakegurui Twin Season 2.
