Newcastle United are now showing an interest in signing Luis Morell and could even start negotiations with Atalanta over a transfer for Juve’s target as soon as Saturday.
Newcastle are now interested in Juventus’ competition for Atalanta’s Luis Morell
According to TuttoMercatoWEB, Newcastle United are now interested in competing with Juventus for the transfer of Atalanta striker Luis Muriel. And Toon could start talks over a deal for the Colombia international as soon as Saturday, with Eddie Howe keen to make a move.
Juventus have already begun their hunt for the 31-year-old as Massimiliano Allegri seeks to re-establish the Bianconeri as the best team in Serie A. But Torino’s strong position will not have a clear path to Morell’s services, with Magpies now launching their ambitious offer.
Newcastle are weighing their assessment of Muriel before holding talks with Atalanta in the coming hours. Talks may begin as early as Saturday, August 6, with Howe determined to improve on the striker’s options available at St James’ Park with Callum Wilson and Chris Wood.
Muriel may emerge as a budget-friendly option for a Tyneside outfit, having entered the final year of his contract. La Dea handed over the international player of 45 caps for four years when he joined from Sevilla for €15m (£12.5m) with up to €3m (£2.5m) in 2019.
Juventus reluctant to meet Atalanta asking price in advanced talks
Howe has now turned his attention to Newcastle signing Muriel after the Atalanta star scored 14 goals last season. He also provided 10 assists in 39 games in all competitions, including nine – and nine goals – from 27 Serie A games, of which he started only 17 times.
Toon will have to outsmart Juventus’ interest to seal a deal with La Dea in exchange for his 5-foot-10 top scorer. But Calciomercato noted that while negotiations between the Bianconeri and Atalanta are at an advanced stage, Allegri is reluctant to pay the price for Bergamo.
Atalanta want to recoup the €15m (£12.5m) they paid Sevilla three years ago, but Juventus feel that’s too much for the 31-year-old. Even if it was for a player, Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovsky has been described as a stronger rival than Cristiano Ronaldo in the past.
“I will not say [Ronaldo] He is the best player in Italy, I think there are better players than him,” the Ukraine international said in 2019, via quotes from Football Italy. “I can say that the best player I have played with is Muriel.
“He’s a great footballer. If things had gone differently, he would have played for Barcelona, it’s hard to believe why that wouldn’t happen. Maybe it depends on his personality, but Muriel is the soul of our dressing room”
In other news, the 28-year-old has now been offered Chelsea after claiming that Tottenham will pay £14.5m.
