Quintessential is the latest Wordle-like word game that will have you hooked

It’s been almost a year since Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle launched Wordle in October 2021 and people are still obsessed with it.

Obviously, the crazy hype has faded, but completing the daily Wordle is a new part of many people’s morning routines—and that doesn’t seem to change anytime soon.

Wordle was bought by the giant New York Times for a seven-figure sum in January 2022 after it took over the world, and millions still play the popular word game.

After its success, a number of other word games were created to try to imitate the popularity of Wordle. Nobody has the same craziness, but it’s fun to play with.

The newest word game everyone seems to be playing is Quintessential, but what is it? How do you play it? Read on to find out…

What is the essence?

Quintessential is a word game that is very similar to Wordle in design but has slightly different rules.

The goal of the game is to correct each of the five horizontal words in the fewest number of moves possible by switching letters.

It uses the same style palette as Wordle, with five words stacked on top of each other in a grid. However, all the messages are already on the board.

All you have to do is decipher the letters to form five different five letter words using the fewest number of moves. Puzzles can be solved in as little as eight moves!

How to play Quintessential

First, visit the Quintessential website here and you will be greeted with a popup on how to play. Press the x in the upper right corner and the game board will appear.

Use your mouse to create five real words by clicking and dragging the letters. The game will tell you which letters are in the right place using colors.

If the plate turns green, it means that the letter is in the right word and the right place. However, if it turns yellow, it means that it is spelled with the correct word but it is not in the correct position.

A gray square means it’s not in the correct word or position, so you’ll need to move it to a different word and try again.

When you get more letters right, things should start to go a little easier and you can start trying to figure out what the words might be.

The game always starts out by giving you some green characters which are also immovable which makes things a little easier.

It will show you the number of moves you’ve used at the bottom of the grid and the goal of the game is to use as few moves as possible.
