Speculation is rife that Tottenham boss Antonio Conte wants to see Roma striker Nicolo Zaniolo come to north London this summer.
It was reported last weekend that Tottenham would use a pre-season friendly match against Jose Mourinho’s side to hold talks about signing the Italy international.
Earlier on Friday, Alfredo Pedolla claimed that Italy team manager Thiago Pinto may hold further talks with Lilliwaites, this time in London.
Today, Tottenham announced their squad numbers for the 2022-23 season.
Interestingly, the number 22 shirt – as it was worn by Zaniolo in the First Division – is vacant.
This, combined with growing speculation about the 23-year-old’s signing, makes this an interesting development and it would be great to see if the two are linked.
Conte and Fabio Barracci have already overseen an impressive transfer window, which was cut short by a £60m deal to sign Richarlison.
Zaniolo will cost them another £42m, but the Italian manager is on record as saying that work within the final month of the window is possible, if the right player becomes available.
It remains to be seen if Zaniolo is the right player, but we know that the same number he wears in Roma is free at Tottenham and time will tell if there is a link here.
