Production for the second season of The Detective Is Already Dead has been confirmed with the launch of the first online trailer.
When thinking about the 2021 summer anime slate, the first shows were Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, TenSura, The Case Study of Vanitas and of course The Detective is already Dead.
The latest series, The Detective is already Dead, was a fantastic mystery comedy series from Studio ENGI, the team behind the likes of Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out, Full Dive, and Trapped in a Dating Sim.
Now, a year after the series debuted worldwide, it’s finally confirmed that a second season is now in production, with a special trailer shared online — here’s everything fans need to know.

The Detective Is Already Dead Finally renewed for Season 2
It’s great news for fans of The Detective is already Dead, as the anime was officially renewed on July 24 for a second season.
The announcement came via the series’ Japanese website under the title “Television Anime Season Two” Detective Is Already Dead. Season 2″, the second season of the TV anime ‘The Detective Is Already Dead’, is now in production!”
“Kimizuka and his friends have faced their past and overcome the fierce battle aboard the cruise ship. The story of the late famous detective Siesta and her legacy will begin to move forward again. An official trailer for Season 2 was also shared online, which confirmed that the main voice cast will reprise their roles for another set of adventures:

While fans will celebrate the news of the series’ return, many have been anticipating this news for some time. Animation renewals usually depend on two factors, the availability of source material from the manga series or light novels and the general popularity of the franchise.
The first season of The Detective is already Dead concluded with the adaptation of the third volume in the Nigoju light novel series. Fortunately, there is plenty of source material left to be adapted for more seasons of the anime, with a total of six volumes currently available in Japan – with the seventh set to be released in August 2022.
In a 2020 interview, Nigoju also said that the main story “will need at least five or six more books” in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion, noting that the anime series The Detective is already Dead may have four seasons.
Next, we have the popularity of the series and to be clear, there are important differences between domestic and international performance. Funimation hasn’t publicly released its official viewing stats, but it’s clear that while The Detective is already Dead has become a popular title on the summer 2021 list, the series never reached the heights many expected after that epic first episode.
As of July 2022, the series has a slightly disappointing rating of 5.8/10 on IMDB and 6.34/10 on MyAnimeList, with over 114,000 reviews and 300,000 members. However, it was clear that the local success of the franchise in Japan was enough for Studio ENGI to see the possibility of renewing the series for a second season.

What date can the detective actually release the second season?
While it has been officially confirmed that the second season of The Detective is already Dead is in production, unfortunately the production team hasn’t shared a targeted release window; However, we can make some predictions based on the first season’s production cycle.
The first season of The Detective is already Dead was announced in January 2021 and premiered in July of this year, but it’s safe to assume that production actually started a few months ago.
While there was enough source material from the following two light novel volumes published to start production on the second season of the anime immediately, Studio ENGI wanted to wait for volumes 6 and 7 before publicly announcing the renewal.
Assuming that The Detective is already Dead Season 2 will see a production schedule similar to the first, the anime could return as soon as January 2023 on the winter slate, although a more realistic scenario would be for April 2023 in the spring broadcast.
