Ivan Perisic has told Astros he is about to join Arsenal in 2019, and Manchester United in 2017 – underlining his happiness at finally getting the chance to play in the Premier League with new club Tottenham Hotspur.
Perisic, 33, joined Tottenham on a free transfer from Inter Milan. One of six signings Spurs have made, along with Fraser Forster, Judd Spence, Clement Lenglet, Yves Bisuma and Richarlison. Over £100 million was spent.
However, Perisic and Forster joined free, and Lenglet free. Inter did not renew the Croatia international’s contract 113 times despite the winger having a hand in 19 goals in 48 games with Inter last season.
Speaking at the Astros ahead of Tottenham’s first game of the season against Southampton, Perisic said he almost joined Arsenal three years ago – likely during the Unai Emery era. Manchester United came close too, five years ago.
“I am very excited to be in the Premier League. I have wanted to come to the Premier League for many years, but something always happens. I can’t wait to get started. I was just about to come, so close. [to coming before]Perisic said.
“With Manchester United in 2017, then Arsenal in 2019. There are a lot of other clubs as well, but always something happened at the last minute. But well, we don’t look at the past. I just want to focus and do my best with Tottenham” .
New Tottenham star Perisic almost joined Arsenal in 2019
There are two surprising things about Perisic’s announcement. The actual fact is that he almost joined Arsenal three years ago, but also that he’s been very open to admitting that. It just ignites the rivalry between the two sides, more than that.
You can imagine what the reception would be like if he showed up at the North London Derby in the Emirates, following his comments. However, Perisic is a top professional and at this point in his career, it wouldn’t affect him that much.
In other news, Leeds’ goal for West Ham said Charlie Taylor was “one of the best in the league”.
