Tragic family death to Stranger Things rumor

The Princess Diaries premiered on this day (August 3) over two decades ago, so what has Princess Genovia and her subjects been from the royal family so far?

From outcast teenager to heiress Genovia, Mia Thermopolis instilled hope in young girls that they too could become princesses. Portrayed by Anne Hathaway, the 2001 film marked her first feature film and Julie Andrews’ return to Disney after Mary Poppins in 1964.

Leading actresses have gone on to become Hollywood royalty – or in the case of Andrews, hold their own – but what are the rest of the cast after up to two decades later?

Where is The Princess Diaries staff now

Anne Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis)

Hathaway needs no introduction. After reprising the role of Mia in the 22-year-old sequel, the actress appeared as Ella Enchanted, which was a box office failure. She’s taken on more mature roles, starting with Brokeback Mountain’s Lureen Newsome Twist in 2005, a year before landing her role in the now-popular Devil Wears Prada alongside Meryl Streep.

Over the past 16 years, the 39-year-old has been the exclusive protagonist in more than 30 films, including Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and Interstella.

A mother of two, she has been married to actor and businessman Adam Shulman since September 2012.

Julie Andrews (Clarice Rinaldi)

Now 89, the legendary actress has been relatively absent on screen since The Princess Diaries, though she lent her voice to Shrek and her sequels as another queen: Lillian of Far Far Away. There is just something about her tone and balanced tone that makes her so regal.

Andrews’ most recent productions have been the voice of the mysterious Mrs. Wesleydon in Bridgeton, and Marlena, the mother of a puppy in Minions: The Rise Of Gru.

Hector Elizondo (Joe)

Hector Elizondo portrayed Joe, Mia’s father’s character and Clarice’s security concern turned love. Like Andrews, his acting career dominated the 30 years before The Princess Diaries and he also worked in several voice roles, including Go, Diego, Go and The Lego Batman Movie.

Elizondo and Hathaway had an on-screen interview at the 2010 rom-com Valentine’s Day, while he was one of the many speakers who praised Andrews for the 48th AFI Life Achievement Award.

The actor became a single father at the age of 20 to Rod Elizondo, born September 1956, and has been married to Carole Campbell since 1969, but the family was struck by tragedy after Rod’s death on February 24, 2017 at the age of 61.

Heather Matarazzo (Lily Moskovitz)

Other than being Mia’s quirky best friend, Matarazzo is best known for her role as Martha Mix in the Scream franchise – her last appearance in the movie was in the 2022 re-release.

Before jumping to any conclusions, she is not the mother of Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo despite the rumours. She explained it on TikTok, where she wrote, “I adore Gaten Matarazzo but he’s not my son.”

As for her personal life, she separated from musician Caroline Murphy in 2012 after four years of marriage. The 39-year-old tied the knot with comedian and writer Heather Turman in November 2018.

Robert Schwartzman (Michael Moskovitz)

Schwartzman photographs Mia’s secret love interest; Fortunately, his feelings were met with a kiss at the end of the movie. Despite coming from movie ownership, Schwartzman has turned to a music career since the 2001 movie.

His parents are Talia Shire (née Coppola) and the late producer Jack Schwartzman. On his mother’s side, his uncle is director Francis Ford Coppola, and he is the cousin of Nicolas Cage and Sophia Coppola.

As the lead vocalist and founder of the pop rock band Rooney, he has released four albums and two EPs, the most recent of which dates back to 2017. The group formed in 1999 from five high school friends, although Schwartzman appears to be the only original member remaining in 2022.

Rooney just finished his The Zombies tour in July.

Schwartzman is married to photographer Zoe Grossman, with whom he shares a twin.
