The mansion was built between 1924 and 1927 at a cost of $7 million. It was built by Marjorie Meriwether Post heiress after she inherited $250 million in 27 from her father Charles William Post. He was the owner of the Postum Cereal Company.
After her death, the palace was handed over to the government according to the will of the Post. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in the United States in 1980, but the government has returned the palace to the Postal Girls where annual maintenance will cost up to $1 million.
