Who is Kuroda Seiki?
He became known in Japan as “the father of Western-style painting” because he was one of the pioneers of the yoga (or Western-style) trend in late 19th- and early 20th-century Japanese painting.
Kuroda was the son of Shimazu clan samurai Kuroda Kiyokane and his wife Yaeko.
He was born in Takamibaba, Satsuma Domain (modern-day Kagoshima Prefecture). The boy was given the name Shintar at birth; when he was 11 years old, this was changed to Seiki.
He went by the shortened version of the same Chinese characters, Kuroda Kiyoteru, in his private life.
