Netflix invites you to experience the dark fantasy of one of the most eagerly anticipated series in recent memory. Of course, we’re talking about The Sandman.

The new series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman and devoted fans of his work will be happy to know that he co-developed the show with David S. Goyer and Alan Heinberg.

The original graphic novel series was published by DC Comics from January 1889 to March 1996, has 75 issues in total and consists of ten commercial paperback books. Now, Netflix fans can watch the story of Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) on screen, a cosmic being who controls the dreams remaining to pick up the pieces after being held captive for years.

With the first season offering 10 party episodes, it’s worth considering how much story these installments offer. So, what versions of the graphic novels does The Sandman adapt to on Netflix?

What graphic novels is The Sandman adapting for on Netflix?

Season 1 covers the first two books of The Sandman.

These two graphic novels, Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House, contain numbers 1 through 16, with prefaces containing the first 8 and The Doll’s House 9 through 16.

Interestingly, those familiar with graphic novels may have noticed that the first four episodes of the Netflix series are named after the first four issues; The imperfect fair hosts sleep, dream a little dream about me, and hope for hell.

Neil Gaiman recently clarified the situation on Twitter.

“Don’t Stop Before Episode Six”

With The Sandman’s graphic novels divided into 10 books, it’s perhaps not surprising that Neil Gaiman has suggested his thoughts on how best to approach the series’ first season.

“I think 10 episodes is probably too long for people to sit and do a listening party all day,” he told IGN in a recent interview.

“…Honestly, I think the emotional impact of all 10 episodes at once will most likely destroy you… I would say that to anyone who has been doing a gigantic viewing party, or planning to take a vacation or something else, I would say go to Episode Six.”

He continued, “Don’t stop before Episode Six, but go to Episode Six and then have a day off to absorb it before you go back and do The Doll’s House.”

The Sandman is broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
