One of six people accused of deliberately setting fire to police cars in Philadelphia during the 2020 protests in response to the police shooting of George Floyd in Minneapolis has been sentenced.
If Ayoub Tebri, 25, is serving his 364-day sentence, he will not initiate proceedings to deport the Moroccan immigrant because he has already served more than half of his sentence.
According to Tabri’s attorney, the green card holder has been living in the United States since the age of six. As a result of the original arson charges, which had a minimum sentence of seven years in prison, he may have been transferred to a foreign country where no one knows or understands the language, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bill McSwain, a former US attorney, vowed to prosecute the six accused on arson charges. Tebri and Lore Elizabeth Blumenthal were among those who agreed to cut deals with federal prosecutors after he left office last year. But prosecutors pushed in court on Monday for a longer ruling.
The defendant’s lawyer, al-Tabari, said on Tuesday that the judge had “taken into account the appropriate facts and delivered a fair verdict.”
He will be required to conduct surveillance and compensation for the Pennsylvania State Police cruiser that Tebri and others wrecked upon his release from prison.

For throwing part of a burning police barrier at an oncoming police car, Blumenthal pleaded guilty to two counts of obstructing law enforcement during civil unrest and will be punished later this month.
To identify the 35-year-old Blumenthal of Jenkintown, police used photos of the protest and social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, to locate him.

When asked about Blumenthal’s case, attorney Paul Hetznecker said he could not comment on the details, but said the shift in prosecution tactics against protesters was important.
In other words, Hetznecker added, “This demonstrates an evolution in prosecutors’ thinking about these cases and placing them in the appropriate context.” It is important to remember that these events occurred at a critical moment in our nation’s history.
Civil rights activists were alarmed by the prosecution against Blumenthal, fearing it was indicative of policies encouraging increased social media and internet surveillance of dissidents.
There were several reasons why the federal government applied severe penalties to individuals who were arrested during the nationwide demonstration. McSwain’s original cartoons were one of the most vivid examples of this.
Later this month, a second defendant is due to plead guilty to lesser charges. Trials of the other three suspects in connection with the police car fires are scheduled to begin later this year.
