Who is Christopher Wray and who appointed FBI director in charge of Donald Trump investigation?

The former US president said in a statement that Donald Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, was raided by FBI agents.

In the statement, Trump wrote: “These are trying times for our nation as my beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, attacked and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.

“Nothing like this has happened to the president of the United States before.”

Amid the reports, we take a look at FBI Director Christopher Wray, who is in charge of the investigation, who appointed him.

Who is Christopher Wray?

Christopher Wray was appointed director of the FBI in August 2017, becoming the eighth director to lead the federal agency.

Ray was born in New York City and graduated from Yale University in 1989. He received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1992 and served as a clerk for Judge J. Michael Luttig on the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Ray has worked for the international law firm King & Spalding for 17 years and served as the Assistant US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

In his most recent role, Wray worked on several federal criminal cases including public corruption, arms trafficking, and drug crimes.

Who appointed him director of the FBI?

It may come as a surprise to find out that Donald Trump appointed Ray as the eighth director of the FBI during his administration.

As reported by Politico in July 2017, Trump confirmed his decision on Twitter and nominated Wray to become the next director of the federal agency.

“I am proud to announce the selection of Christopher as Director of the FBI,” Trump said in a statement to the White House.

“He is a meticulously qualified individual who I know will once again serve his country as a fierce guardian of law and a model of integrity once the Senate confirms him to lead the FBI.”

Ray said it was a “great honor” to be chosen for the role, adding that he looked forward to “serving the American people with integrity.”

Inside my profession

During his time at the Department of Justice, Ray served as the assistant deputy attorney general before becoming the principal deputy attorney general in the office of the deputy attorney general in Washington.

Ray served as Assistant Attorney General from 2003 to 2005 during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

During Bush’s tenure, Wray was responsible for the counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and export control divisions. He was also part of the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force and was responsible for the Enron task force.

Wray received the Edmund J Randolph Award in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the public service sector.
