Who Is Pierre Trudeau?

From 1968 to 1979 and from 1980 to 1984, Joseph Philippe-Pierre-Yves Eliot Trudeau, a Canadian lawyer and politician, served as the 15th Prime Minister of Canada. In the years 1979 to 1980, he also briefly held the position of Leader of the Opposition. From 1968 to 1984, he headed the Canadian Liberal Party.

Trudeau, along with his comrades Jean Marchand and GĂ©rard Pelletier, joined the Liberal Party in 1965. They succeeded in running in the 1965 elections for the Liberals and were awarded the media nickname “Three Wise Men”. At Mont-Royal in Montreal, a liberal safe zone, Trudeau was elected. He would retain that seat during his political retirement in 1984, winning every election by large margins.

He believed that the Federal National Party could not win power, which contributed to his decision to join the Canadian Liberal Party in place of the CCF’s successor, the New Democratic Party (NDP). He also questioned the feasibility of the party’s centralization policies. He believed that the party leadership was moving more and more in the direction of the “backward nations” strategy.

After arriving in Ottawa, Trudeau was selected to serve as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Lester Pearson. He then spent most of the following year traveling the world, speaking on behalf of Canada at conferences and organizations around the world, including the United Nations. He was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General in the Pearson government in 1967.
