*Warning: Spoilers await Virgin River Season 4*
One of the biggest talking points of the Virgin River’s fourth season is Denny’s appearance when he arrives in town claiming to be the grandson of Dr. Vernon Mullins.
Suspicion soon arises around Denny, as Muriel challenges his claims that he is Doc’s grandson while Lizzie also questions why he keeps pushing her away despite their apparent admiration for each other.
As Season 4 of Virgin River progresses, things take an even more baffling turn when Lizzie finds a bottle of cereal in Denny’s room prescribed to Ryan Cutler, a previously unmentioned character.
Naturally, inquisitive Virgin River fans didn’t waste any time asking who this mysterious character was.

Lizzie’s fishy discovery
In episode 7 of season 4 of Virgin River, Denny invites Lizzie to dinner after the pair exchanged a Renaissance kiss in the previous episode.
While Denny is preparing food, he asks Lizzie to take his phone charger from his room so he can check in with Hope.
While Lizzie is searching the office in his room, she discovers a bottle of clonazepam (branded Klonopin) pills prescribed to a person named Ryan Cutler, a character not mentioned in Virgin River yet.
She didn’t mention anything to Denny, but in the next episode, she relayed the suspicious discovery to Doc, who had previously confronted Denny about breaking into the medicine cabinet at the clinic at the end of Episode 5.
Who is Ryan Cutler in Virgin River?
Ryan Cutler is Denny’s late father.
We never met Brian at the Virgin River as he died a month before Denny arrived in town and the subsequent events of Season 4.
As Denny claims to be Doc’s grandson, this also means that Ryan will technically be Doc’s son as well.
In the first episode of season four, Denny makes it clear that he’s the grandson of Rose Miller, a woman he dated during college before breaking off their relationship when Vernon attended medical school.
However, what Rose didn’t mention was that she was apparently pregnant at the time of their breakup, and she later went on to give birth to Ryan without Doc’s knowledge.
How did Ryan Cutler die?
Ryan Cutler died of Huntington’s disease.
Huntington’s disease is a degenerative condition that stops parts of the brain from working properly over time and is usually fatal after up to 20 years.
It was revealed at the finale of Virgin River’s season 4 that Denny had also been diagnosed with the disease because Huntington’s disease is usually inherited from the person’s parents.
According to the UK’s NHS website, Huntington’s can cause difficulty concentrating, memory loss, depression and mood swings. While it can also cause difficulty moving, breathing and speaking in its later stages.
The bottle of clonazepam that Lizzie found was originally prescribed to Ryan Cutler, but Denny was taking the pills himself to relieve his symptoms as the drug is used to prevent and control seizures and panic attacks by calming the brain and nerves according to WebMD.
Religious illness is also the reason he keeps pushing Lizzie away because he doesn’t want to hurt her as his condition continues to deteriorate.
