He entered Vanderbilt University in 1969 as a valedictorian for his class at Zachary High School and declared political science, philosophy, and economics as his interdepartmental major. Kennedy joined Phi Beta Kappa and was voted as Vanderbilt’s Senior Class President. At the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he served as executive editor of the Virginia Law Review and was selected as a Coif, he received his Juris Doctor in 1977.
