Mary and Johnson Sr. obtained a divorce, and the first had a history of violent and abusive treatment of her son. When Johnson Sr. realized this, he made the decision to leave her and eventually planned to divorce her.

They moved from Oklahoma, where she was repeatedly accused of abusing her child, to Hobbs. For about 40 days, Bruce was separated from his mother before she finally insisted on seeing him. Before filing for divorce, Johnson went to see them in Oklahoma after they agreed.

Johnson was apparently asleep on the night of the horrific accident until startled by his son’s screams, he ran into another room.

The moment Bruce’s father called 911 and saw him lying on the bed with another stab wound, he also saw his wife lying in another room. At about 1:00 AM, after receiving the complaint from the vice mayors, the mother and son couple were taken to Hobbs Covenant Hospital while Bruce was still alive.

Bruce accused his mother of stabbing him at this point, and at 4:19 a.m., he died. An autopsy conducted in Albuquerque confirmed the stabbing of the eleven-year-old.
