After returning home from a night out, a man accidentally hangs himself while “joking”. He was trying to scare his fiancée. On February 28, 36-year-old Philip Burns died at his residence on Thompson Street in Carlisle.
According to Cockermouth Court Coroner, Burns spent weekdays working in Glasgow and weekends to see his fiancée, Michelle Delahunte Evans, in Carlisle.

He had arrived in Carlisle that afternoon, and he and his fiancée had gone to the pub for an audition. Although Burns did consume some cocaine, according to her, he didn’t do it very often. They had “a few drinks” and were “laughing” when they came out on Sunday, February 27, in Carlisle. She said they came home, were “joking” and “acting ridiculous.”
Delahunty-Evans confirmed that when she turned to face the door while watching TV and singing with her, she noticed Burns standing there. She said that when they were watching “American Horror Story” this weekend, Burns was trying to scare her.

Further inquiries showed that Burns was “walking around” to get his fiancée’s attention. Emergency services were called after 3.30 a.m. about a 36-year-old man who was not breathing.
Delahunty-Evans rushed outside and called for help because she couldn’t find her phone to call 999. A police officer who attended the accident reported that when he got there, someone was trying CPR for a man who was on the ground and not breathing.
According to him, Burns’ companion was “drunk” and “shocked” at what was happening. The burns were already lying on the floor when a police officer arrived, and the door frame was damaged.
A toxicological examination of his blood revealed that he had significant levels of alcohol and that it contained cocaine. Coroner Dr. Nicholas Shaw claimed that Burns had recently shown no suicidal ideation.
“If someone is found hanged, you would initially assume that they committed suicide,” he told the Daily Mail. Philip has no history of mental illness or self-harm. He just spent the night outside and seems to be enjoying himself.
