Concerns have been raised about the upcoming Togashi live series

While the vast majority of Togashi fans will be celebrating the recent update related to the Hunter x Hunter manga, many are concerned about the new announcement that confirmed a direct adaptation of his other infamous series, Yo Yu Hakusho was in the making.

In December 2020, Netflix revealed that the Yu Yu Hakusho live series is in development, with the streaming giant recently revealing the main cast members for the adaptation.

It will be Yosuke I photographed Written by Takumi Kitamura, Jun Chisun will play Kurama, with Shōhyo Usuji and Kanata Hongo resurrecting Kazuma Kuwabara and Hei, respectively.

“The allure of ‘YuYu Hakusho’ which I have loved for over 30 years. I think the charm of ‘YuYu Hakusho’ is above all the charm of its characters. I was fascinated by the characters as a child, and am still influenced by them today. When I read it again as an adult, I discovered New magic. And the themes in the stories never get old.” Director Shu Tsukikawa, via Comic Natalie.

The series is currently slated to premiere in December 2023, but the announcement didn’t live up to fan expectations — especially since the adaptations of Resident Evil and Cowboy Bebop have flopped so nicely.

Fan-favourite MoistCr1tikal (aka Penguinz0, i.e. Charlie White), noted in a recent video: “I didn’t think it was possible to sink Netflix less than Resident Evil or the live Cowboy Bebop show but somehow, I found a way to go further. So “.

“Why? When they adapt these shows, except for One Piece as it hasn’t appeared yet, but Cowboy Bebop and Resident Evil. They just aren’t loyal. They take so much creative freedom that they distort the property for something unrecognizable. And they do it with pride. They They don’t bother trying to get the characters, the story, or even the essential elements of it to translate [into] Live action. So why adapt it in the first place? What are you doing there? — MoistCr1tikal, via YouTube.

He’ll then add how “all you do is get out of the built-in fan base and lose interest from people who don’t know the franchise because the production isn’t good enough to stand on two feet.”

“You borrowed a name from a popular franchise and did a *** job of adapting it so you lose that fan base, and since it’s an adaptation of *** you lose people who didn’t even know the franchise in the first place.” — MoistCr1tikal, via YouTube.

More information about Togashi’s upcoming live-action Yu Hakusho series is expected to be shared over the coming months, so fingers crossed that Netflix could turn the tide of their animation adaptations before the ship sinks well and truly forever.
