Gregory and Goldie – A mogul is so cute you’ll cry

We are first introduced to Gregory in episode two of The Sandman, a gigantic green gargoyle under the care and protection of Cain and Abel.

Speaking by grunts, only beings of The Dreaming can understand Gregory; However, it is clear from their relations that Gregory is a beloved family member.

Interestingly, in the book series and according to The Sandman’s Fandom page, “He rescues Morpheus from the edge of Dreaming when Morpheus is too weak to reach his castle and deposits the Dream Lord on Abel’s doorstep.”

Gregory was originally created by Dream the Endless, and as such, must be sacrificed in order for Dream to regain some of his power stored in Gargoyle.

However, Dream acquires a new Gargoyle egg while collecting items for The Fates and returning it to Abel’s tomb – which he wakes up assuming an apology from Cain for killing him with a pitchfork.

Soon the egg hatches and reveals a beautiful golden baby Gargoyle. Abel first wants to call the baby “Irving,” to which Kane tells him that Gargoyle’s names should start with the letter J.

Eventually, the brothers settled on Goldie, although Abel later revealed that he still calls baby Gargoyle “Jerving” in his heart. In the original comics, Goldie was a male but this was changed to a female in the 1995 spin-off The Dreaming.

Impressively, Goldie and Gregory were good friends in the original series, with the latter often helping baby Gargoyle get Abel back together after he was murdered by his brother.

Fans share their emotional reactions to Gregory’s assimilation

Among the sheer number of social media posts relating to Gregory, it’s clear that fans around the world were deeply upset about his death/re-absorption, and perhaps not many of them expected such a dramatic transformation so early to meet the adorable Gargoyle.
