In Glens Falls, New York, David married Mary Catherine Connelly, a native American whose family had lived in the country for several generations, and he became a Baptist preacher there.

David and Mary Hughes’ lone child, Charles Evans Hughes, was born in Glens Falls on April 11, 1862. In 1866, the Hughes family settled in Oswego, New York, but they soon moved to Newark, New Jersey, and eventually Brooklyn. Hughes did not obtain a formal education until 1874, when he briefly attended Newark High School. His parents were responsible for his education prior to that time.
