A fact-checking site called Snopes notes that although the angle makes it appear as if the women landed inside the whale’s mouth, they actually landed behind it in the water.

Back in 2020, CNN reported that the two women “managed to escape unharmed, briefly going underwater after the capsize before reappearing.”

“I saw the big aquarium, the big bait ball coming out of the water,” Julie McSorley, one of the women, told KMPH. “I saw the whale come. I thought, Oh, no! It’s so close.”

“Suddenly, I lifted up, and I was in the water.”

“The whale was right here in my face, literally,” Liz Cottrell said.

In addition, humpback whales cannot swallow humans.

While mammals can fit humans in their huge mouths, it is impossible for a whale to swallow a human. A National Geographic report reveals that “a hunchback’s throat is about the size of a human fist.”
