How many of the original Star Trek cast are still with us?

Star Trek: The Original Series was an innovator of the franchise and genre on so many levels and the late Nichelle Nichols was part of this incredible project that has stood the test of time.

First aired in 1966, we take a look at the original Star Trek actors who are still with us today and share some of the cast’s tributes to Nichelle Nichols.

The death of Nichelle Nichols

Yesterday, her son, Kyle Johnson, reported the death of Nichelle Nichols on Saturday, July 30, 2022, in Silver City, New Mexico. She was 89 years old.

Nichols portrayed the iconic role of Lieutenant Nyota Oora on the show between 1966 and 1969, and the actor’s image paved the way for black women in television.

On Nichols’ official Facebook page, Johnson confirmed the actor’s death and wrote a personal message to fans:

“But its light, like the ancient galaxies now seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn and be inspired by.”

How many original Star Trek representatives are still with us?

Of the original seven crew members on the USS Enterprise, Nichols was one of the four surviving cast members.

William Shatner, George Takei, and Walter Koenig became the only surviving members of the original core group.

Walter Koenig played the Russian navigator Pavel Chekhov, he portrayed Takei Hikaru Solo, the commander of the enterprise, and Shatner played the role of commanding officer James T. Kirk.

William Shatner and George Takei honor Nichols

Star Trek star William Shatner and George Takei shared a touching tribute to Nicholl Nichols on Twitter.

Takei spent much of Sunday sharing various articles in honor of Nichols, along with several appreciation posts across social media.

Shatner shared a touching tweet praising the actor’s work as Uhura and the legacy the character and actor left behind.
