Joey King’s incredible dedication to acting saw her shave her head three times

Joy King – who turns 23 today (July 30, 2022) – is best known for her role in The Kissing Booth, but has appeared in several films where she was unrecognizable due to her shaved head.

Actors are paid staggering amounts not only for their on-screen talents, but also for the months of preparation. Some celebrities train new skills for months, or in Lady Gaga’s case, live everyday life with a strong Italian accent for about an entire year.

Another big commitment is to completely shave your head, which is exactly what Joey King did not once, not twice, but three times. At this point, it looks like the actress has never had more hair than a full head in her 16-year career in Hollywood.

I started shaving my head in 2012

Joy has established herself as a talented actress who started out with a background role on a 2006 episode of Malcolm In The Middle. Six years later, at the age of twelve, King appeared as a young Talia Al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, alongside Christian Bale.

Speaking to Allure in July 2022, the actress revealed that she never regrets shaving her hair despite the negativity, and even recommends women try it at least once.

“I would do it again, I’ve never felt more free or more in tune with my beauty. I couldn’t hide behind my hair,” she explained. “A lot of people made fun of me when I shaved my head. A lot of people said things that really meant. But when I had short hair, I really felt more confident; I felt so powerful.”

2014: I Wish You Were Here

The second round came two years later for the comedy drama Wish I Was Here. Embodying Grace Bloom, her character shaves her head to get attention and wears a vibrant pink wig for the rest of the movie. The unexpected head shave resulted in intense tears from her And the Her on-screen mother cries over the loss of her “beautiful hair”.

If anything, it was the wig that made a statement, not her lack of hair.

2019: Law

Joey starred as Gypsy Rose Blanchard on Hulu’s true crime series The Act, based on the events between Blanchard and her mother Dee Dee, who passed away in 2015.

On the show, Gypsy Rose is confined to a wheelchair due to several fake illnesses, which Dee Dee orchestrated. In the end, she was killed by Rose’s friend.

Blanchard told Bustle via email that legal action will be taken against the show’s creators for using her name and story without her consent. Other developments in the case, if any, remain unknown to the public.

As for Joey, her devotion to the role, which included training her voice to a boisterous, child-like tone without expert guidance, paid off. She earned her Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations that year.

At this rate, her next transformation will be the winner.
