Who is Charlie Burke in The Orville?

Ensign Charlie Burke is a new arrival in Season 3 of The Orville where she replaces John LaMarr as the ship’s second navigator after being promoted to chief engineer.

Played by Anne Winters, Charlie Burke’s history before joining the crew of Orville is a complicated one as she previously served aboard the USS Quimby until it was destroyed by Kylon in the Battle of the Earth.

Charlie was close to a fellow officer aboard Quimby, Amanda, and began to develop romantic feelings for her, but she never found out if their feelings were mutual.

During the Earth Battle, Amanda and Charlie attempt to abandon Quimby but the escape chamber malfunctions, leaving Amanda to manually release her and control her fate aboard the doomed ship.

Thanks to Isaac’s betrayal of the Federation of Planets that sparked the conflict against Kaylon, Charly has a deep resentment of him while also harboring an intense hatred of Kaylon for her role in Amanda’s death.

Charlie’s sacrifice in episode 9

In episode 9 of Season 3 of The Orville, Charly and Isaac develop a device capable of destroying Kaylon’s entire fleet, which the Federation of Planets hopes to use as leverage to secure a truce with Kaylon.

However, Union General Perry believes that Kaylon will simply develop a weapon of his own to counter the new deadly machine and betray the Union and hand the weapon over to the newly formed Moclan and Krill alliance, believing that Krill will not hesitate to use the weapon against Kaylon.

Ed realizes that this new alliance, with a weapon capable of mass destruction, could be disastrous for everyone, and so he hesitates to form an alliance with Kaylon themselves to prevent mass destruction.

During the massive battle that breaks out between the two alliances, Charlie sacrifices herself to destroy the weapon and to prevent it from being used against Kylon even though she has long been resentful against the robot race.

For her heroic actions, the Orville crew pays tribute to their fallen comrade while Kaylon agrees to join the Federation of Planets, thus ending the deadly war between the two factions.
