Netflix has become a veritable home for true crime documentaries in recent years with series like Making A Murderer, Night Stalker, and Tiger King becoming must-watches.
It looks like the latest true crime series, I Just Killed My Dad, will follow those illustrious steps with fans who waste no time delving into the baffling new case.
As its title suggests, I Just Killed My Father tells the story of Anthony Templet and how he killed his father, but the case proves to be anything but open and closed.

Case I just killed my father
You Just Killed My Father arrived on Netflix on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.
The three-episode series tells the incredible story of the Templet family and how 17-year-old Anthony shot and killed his father, Bert.
Anthony did not deny that his father was shot and turned himself in to police officers in the aftermath.
However, what initially appeared to be a straightforward case proved to be none other than Anthony’s full life story that began to emerge and paint a markedly different picture of the father-son dynamic in Templets.
What happened to Anthony Templet?
The events that led to the fateful actions of Anthony Templet have their roots in his childhood, which was far from harmonious.
As revealed in the documentary, his father Anthony was kidnapped from his mother Teresa at the age of seven after Burt lost custody of his son.
Anthony grew up under a system of abuse, control, and neglect that prevented his father from going to school or even doctors or dentists, put a tracker on his phone and covered their home with security cameras.
While Teresa has been searching for Anthony for years, Burt tried on the facade of a typical family man and welcomed a woman named Susan and her son Peyton into the family home.
However, Burt couldn’t hide his abusive behavior forever, and both Susan and Peyton left, which seemed to be when Burt started to deteriorate even more. He lost his job, accumulated debts of $80,000, and began to drink excessively.
Even more worrisome, Burt started walking around with guns loaded on his person, according to Digital Spy, including at home.
On the night of June 3, 2019, 17-year-old Burt and Anthony got into a fight that ended when Anthony picked up one of Burt’s rifles and shot him, hitting him twice with three shots.
After the incident, Anthony called the police, confessing to shooting his father. He cooperated with all police requests and was arrested.
Burt initially survived the shooting, but after three days in the hospital, he was taken off life support and died of his injuries.
Anthony Templet rebuilds his family
Anthony Templet, now 20, didn’t end up serving a prison sentence for his father’s death.
The Louisiana native was initially charged with second-degree murder, but was eventually convicted in March 2021 of negligent homicide, according to RadioTimes. Anthony was sentenced to five years of probation, which will last until 2026.
As part of his probation agreement, Anthony was required to attend therapy sessions and earn a high school diploma after he was banned from attending school when he was younger.
I Just Killed My Father also reveals that Anthony is beginning to rebuild his relationship with his mother and grandmother in Texas.
However, Teresa says in the series: “This is harder than losing him. I want to be his friend because I know it will never be a mother-son relationship. That was a thing of the past.”
I Just Killed My Dad is now available to stream on Netflix after its August 9, 2022 release.
