Why did Netflix cancel First Kill?
Strong viewership numbers weren’t enough to save First Kill – which is totally bad.
In fact, after its first week, the series reached third place in the top 10 weekly English language TV series with 48.8 million hours watched. It even hit 100 million hours after the first month.
But despite this, according to Deadline First Kill it didn’t meet the cost-per-viewing limit for completing episodes – which ultimately led to the decision to cancel.
The first killing season on a cliff hanger is over
The plot begins when both Juliet and Calliope are about to carry out their first murders – but as they get closer, they realize that this isn’t possible.
With a romance inspired by Shakespeare, the couple would constantly find themselves in a battle against each other with their opposing families.
The first season ended on a cliff, as Juliet and Calliope decided to end their relationship.
This was because Juliet had mistakenly turned Calliope’s brother, Theo into a vampire in an attempt to kill him with dignity. With Theo now turning into what his family hunts and despises, this is what viewers were most excited to see more of.
Of course, this means that viewers are even more angry about the cancellation of the series, since the plot will now be left a mystery.
Viewers react to ‘first kill’ banishment
First Kill fans have taken to social media to discuss their outrage over Netflix’s killing of the hit show.
One viewer wrote: “There was literally no reason to cancel the first kill. It got over 30 million views in its first week and over 40 million views in its second week.”
Another added, “The craziest part is that it doesn’t look like the first killing doing BAD. It’s been in vogue for weeks, doing numbers, like Netflix would rather lose money than make it back?”
Some viewers are not convinced of Netflix’s reasons for canceling. One Twitter user wrote: “Netflix said canceling the first kill was bc of insufficient views for the cost when they literally gave them a $5 budget and a juice box and got 100 million watch hours in return…”
